YOU ARE INVITED

Dear [name]:

I am happy to announce that we are accepting applications to PHILOI International. PHILOI is a program at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) designed to support the initial formation of Dominican brothers from around the world, especially in the area of philosophy and in accordance with the Ratio Studiorum Generalis. DSPT is the center of studies for the Dominicans in the Western United States.

DSPT, located in Berkeley, California, has been identified as a leading resource for philosophical studies for the whole Order (Biên Hòa, 312). The School grants graduate level degrees in Philosophy and Theology with particular emphasis on the integration of the two subjects. PHILOI (a Greek word for friends who support each other like a family) is designed to provide formation to our student brothers from around the world who may not otherwise have access to philosophical studies specifically in our Dominican tradition.

We are humbled by fr. Gerard Timoner’s gracious and energetic recommendation of PHILOI in his letter drafted on the Feast of St. Albert the Great.

Dominican intellectual traditions and their contemporary applications could have far-reaching consequences for all peoples. The influence of Dominican friars in philosophical fields like logic, metaphysics, anthropology, and ethics can enrich humanity and open ways to the truth of the Gospel we preach. This moment in history is especially important as human reason enlightened by faith, and the truths we can discover, guide us in an age characterized by the “personal struggles, moral confusion and fragmentation of knowledge” (Pope Benedict XVI) that Pope Franics calls “the spiritual poverty of our time.”

I invite you and your brothers to connect with us at PHILOI using the short inquiry form on our website. Applications completed by March 1st could lead to enrollment by Fall of 2021.

Preaching the Gospel for the salvation of souls is our life’s work all over the world. We are grateful and blessed to be able to help the Order make an authentic Dominican education available to our brothers through PHILOI.

In Christ and St. Dominic,

Fr. Christopher Fadok, O.P.
Prior Provincial of the
Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (Western U.S.A.)
